From the Backseat to the Browser: The Journey of Peg Solitaire
The Memory: A Journey in a Yellow Box
I have a vivid memory from my childhood: long car journeys to holiday destinations in Spain or Italy. To pass the time, I would play a game endlessly. It was a compact, yellow plastic case that opened to reveal a board full of holes and little red pegs. The game was Peg Solitaire. The goal was simple yet captivating—jump pegs over each other to remove them, aiming to finish with a single peg left in the center. I still have that little box somewhere, a tangible piece of my past.
A Game with a Royal History
While my introduction was in a plastic case, Peg Solitaire’s roots are much more aristocratic. The game is often called the “33-hole English board” variant and first gained widespread popularity in the 17th century. While its exact origins are debated, the most popular theory places it at the French court of King Louis XIV. The Sun King himself is said to have played it, and the game spread across Europe from there. It was a favorite pastime among the nobility, a elegant test of logic and foresight that has now become a global classic.
The Inspiration: Designing the SolioPat Logo
Years later, this memory surfaced when I was tasked with designing a logo for SolioPat, a collaboration of intellectual property experts. The core idea was to represent independent patent attorneys who, while autonomous, are supported by a network of colleagues. The classic Solitaire board, with its pegs and empty holes, provided the perfect visual metaphor.
The final logo features a blue ‘I’ and a black ‘P’ for Intellectual Property. The independent members are symbolized by a circled ‘s’, standing alone amidst other dots. This perfectly illustrates an attorney who is not rigidly connected to the others but is surrounded by them, able to call upon them for referrals, replacements, or consultation. The design was directly inspired by the layout of the Peg Solitaire board.
The Creation: A WordPress Plugin is Born
The process of designing that logo rekindled my love for the game. I decided to bring it to life digitally, using the skills I’ve honed as a web developer. The result is a feature-rich Peg Solitaire WordPress Plugin.
Note: It still needs some finetuning in difficulty levels and some styling in general. The music starts a bit slow and maybe I want to change the grid size and the game variants into more unique ones. So, still working on it but for now it is a great demo.

This plugin is a love letter to that classic game, but enhanced for the modern web:
- 8 Board Variants: From the classic English board to European, Diamond, and even a Pyramid shape.
- Full Customization: Choose from multiple color schemes and material themes like Wood, Glass, and Metal.
- Immersive Audio: Enjoy a relaxing ambient soundtrack and satisfying sound effects for every move.
- Smart Features: Track your best scores in the Hall of Fame, use the undo function, and get hints if you’re stuck.
It’s the same simple, compelling puzzle I loved as a boy, now reimagined for website visitors to enjoy on any device. From a yellow box on my lap during a family trip, to a professional logo, to a plugin on your WordPress site—the journey of this game continues.
